TWO MORE RESTAURANTS TO OPEN

We were delighted when it was announced in the press that, in addition to The Dock, two more restaurants will be opening up near #KingPointMarina ensuring that it is one of THE places to go in the city.

In another tantalising step towards the £200million master plan to regenerate Plymouth, local news reported that the closed-down and boarded up former Sippers pub is to be turned into a restaurant after being bought by the family behind Plymouth's renowned Rock Salt diner.

Rock Salt is a family run restaurant just down the road from Millbay and King Point Marina. Head Chef Dave Jenkins is driven by a passion for ‘good, honest, food’ that has made the restaurant a foodie hub in Plymouth. In a report in The Herald newspaper Jean Lightfoot, Dave's step-mother and in charge of admin for the family-run business, said; "We have purchased Sippers and within the next few weeks will start work. It's pretty run down, we'll revamp it, but won't open it until next year."

The family has yet to decide on a name for the new venture, or what sort of food it will be serving but they are starting extensive renovations with a plan to open the venue as a restaurant, café and bar with 60 – 70 covers, creating about 20 jobs.

This news comes not long before Michelin Star Chef Peter Gorton, who has run several restaurants and a hotel during his 34 year career, is due to open the former Restaurant Academy at Studio 5/11 in Millbay Road. The training academy will work as a fully functioning cafe/bistro with 20 trainees learning the ropes in the kitchen and front of house, as well as learning theory and other subjects such as maths and English in the classroom.

In the meantime, plans for the new Millbay building designed around the character of a ship are still in discussion. The dramatic 11-storey-high structure will be positioned on the disused pier. Held up by a series of curved steel ‘ribs’ and containing 64 luxury apartments, it could well be another jewel in Plymouth’s crown – and we know that the view will be superb – the sea on one side and King Point Marina on the other!
